In this special prayer-focused issue: pray for the victims of violence in Jos, Nigeria; pray for Gao Zhisheng, still missing in China; and pray for Sri Lanka’s presidential election next week.

Jos, NigeriaYour prayers are bearing fruit in Nigeria

Since we sent the Urgent Prayer Alert on Tuesday night, asking you to pray about the outbreaks of violence in Jos, the situation has been contained and is a lot calmer. Your prayers are really having an effect! Use the prayer update sheet in your church this week, to pray for the families of the victims, and for the Christians who still feel unsafe in their homes.

CSW is concerned to ensure that media coverage of the situation is accurate and has provided firsthand eyewitness information from CSW Nigeria to news agencies. The initial BBC online coverage of the violence was less than even-handed, appearing to report on the situation from the point of view of one religious community. CSW is keen to see balanced, accurate reporting of the devastation, and you can be part of this process. Please email the BBC to ask them to get information from sources on both sides of any future conflicts, helping to guarantee accurate, unbiased reporting, and to avoid inflaming a delicate situation.

Gao Zhisheng

Pray for Gao Zhisheng, still missing in China

A Chinese official has revealed that Gao Zhisheng, a prominent Chinese human rights activist who’s been missing since February 2009 ‘went missing’ from police custody ‘while on a walk’ in September 2009. This is an answer to our prayers, as this is the first time the government has admitted that Gao was ever in their custody. Please keep praying for Gao, as his whereabouts and wellbeing are still unknown.

Sri Lanka

Pray for Sri Lanka’s presidential election next week

Since the end of the civil war in 2009, there have been signs of an increase in religiously-motivated violence and discrimination against Christians in Sri Lanka, fuelled by the Buddhist nationalist ideology.
Next Tuesday, Sri Lankans will vote for a new president and the new head of state will face the complex challenge of rebuilding a peaceful, just and united society, which is genuinely inclusive of both ethnic and religious minorities.

>>> Stand together in prayer for the forthcoming elections.
