Many in our urban communities have been hit by the impact of the global recession.  Tom and Christine Sine will present new challenges that are likely to face the urban poor, those that work with them and our churches as we race into an increasingly volatile new decade.

In response to these challenges, Tom and Christine Sine will invite you to create:

  • New forms of urban engagement and integral mission

  • New forms of community living and service in urban centres

  • New missional expressions of the church in our cities

  • New lifestyles of celebration, spirituality and service

Session themes:

  • Exploring new challenges that are likely to face our urban communities, the church and our lives in this decade and anticipating future change

  • Rediscovering a sense of God’s missional purposes for our lives, congregation and our cities in troubled times

  • Using biblical images of hope to create new models of life, community and engagement

  • Learning from those on the innovative edge who are creating new forms of urban engagement, missional congregations, and whole-life faith

What you can expect:

  • Practical, down-to-earth teaching from experienced practitioners
  • The chance to share and learn from people with similar work and life choices
  • Worship and reflective activities as well as time to think and pray
  • Fun! We only take the Gospel seriously, not ourselves

Introducing Tom and Christine Sine

Christine and Tom live in Christian community in Seattle.  They are active in an Anglican church and have the opportunity to work with and learn from the innovative edge of the church in a number of different countries including the UK.

Christine heads the ministry of Mustard Seed Associates. MSA is an international network with the mission statement: “Believing that God is changing the world through mustard seeds—the seemingly insignificant— MSA seeks to unleash the creative potential of ordinary people to make a difference in their communities and a world of urgent need.”  MSA specialises in helping Christian leaders deal with the challenges facing our world as well as creative ways Christians are already responding.

Christine has taught courses on urban mission at Fuller Theological Seminary. Originally from Australia where she trained as a doctor, Christine headed up the medical ministry of Mercy Ships and had the opportunity to work with the poor in many different countries.  Her newest book is GodSpace.  Christine also co-authored Living on Purpose: Finding God’s Best for Your life with Tom. She has a very active blog that shares articles written by authors from different countries on how to create spiritual practices for daily life in our high pressure world.

Tom has worked as an urban social worker and educator as well as developing a community development project in Haiti for World Concern. These days he and Christine spend a lot of time trying to learn what God is doing through a new generation of innovators. That is what led Tom to write The New Conspirators: Creating the Future One Mustard Seed at a Time in 2008. Tom has also taught at Fuller Theological Seminary. His previous books include Mustard Seed Vs McWorld: Re-inventing Life and Faith for the Future.  This book presents some innovative ways people of faith are responding on the challenges of globalisation.

What people said about our 2009 residential event:

“I really needed this and feel better able to go back to serve my community.”

“I loved the rhythm of the event, enough sessions and breaks, and being with so many people who shared a passion for ministry. It was refreshing and reflective.”

“The Bible teaching, rooted in service and experience, made me connect to others. You have created a home here for so many – it’s really special.”

About the venue:

If you have not been to Hothorpe Hall, you are in for a treat. A restored manor house dating back to 900AD, it is located in a small village in Leicestershire with wonderful views of green fields, sheep and stars at night (a special treat for city types). The bedrooms have been renovated recently, the food is consistently good and the staff are friendly. We have exclusive use of the building so if you want time away to reflect there is always space. For travel directions, please visit Hothorpe Hall’s website.

Why has the cost gone up?

Good question. We try to keep the cost down so we subsidise this event to make it possible for people from churches and community projects with limited budgets to come. This year, due to financial constraints, we need to decrease the subsidy so the cost has gone up slightly. We hope that you can still come, though.
