Connect and encourage from CSW

Relay - CSW's weekly e-newsletter

1 July 2010
This week we’ve published the new summer 2010 edition of Connect & Encourage, which will help you bring great encouragement to the persecuted; and we need you to pray for Afghanistan.

Connect & Encourage – your cards make a huge difference!
Often we can’t visit those in prison, but we can be present alongside them by our written encouragement. In addition to the compassion we feel because of their suffering, Jesus himself said that, we’re directly honouring Him: “I was in prison and you came to visit me … whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Kenia Gude Perez
Pastor Omar Gude Perez, a prominent Cuban church leader, was imprisoned on trumped-up charges and had his appeal denied.  On 16 July it’s the anniversary of his trial.  However, we’re delighted to report that the government has decided not to evict his family from their home.  Omar’s wife, Kenia, is so grateful for your frequent cards, which give them hope and encouragement!

Dr Oscar Biscet
Dr Oscar Elias Biscet is a devout Christian human rights defender, sentenced in 2003 to 25 years in prison.  As a long-term prisoner, he needs our continuing prayer and encouragement:  He still has seventeen years of his sentence to serve – by sending him cards you can let him know he’s not forgotten, especially on 17 July ,which is his birthday.

Waji-ul-Hassan
Waji Ul-Hassan was handed a death sentence, amongst other penalties, under Pakistan’s  blasphemy laws in July 2002. Waji remains on death row pending an appeal decision. Christian lawyers’ group (LADS), filed the appeal in the same year and their Chairman, Parvez Choudhry, who has personally presented Waji’s appeal case several times, has received death threats because of this.

“We see the hand of the living God each day in our lives, even though we are in this country in such a difficult situation, God has never forsaken us, we claim His promises every day”  Kenia Gude Perez

Connect & Encourage

Here’s how it works…
You write encouraging cards to people listed in Connect & Encourage… yes it’s that simple!  As a church, a small group or as an individual you’re free to write to those you want to encourage.  And summertime is often more laid back so get some friends together in the garden and get encouraging the persecuted!  Be as enthusiastic as you like – you could even have a card-writing party!  This is grassroots, tangible, effective encouragement of the persecuted, and it’s so easy to do!

Afghanistan: Pray for protection and peace
Footage emerging in recent weeks of Afghan baptisms has sparked off widespread condemnation of Christians. These events might have life-threatening concequences for Christian communities, NGOs and aid workers. Muslims who choose to become Christians often find themselves outcast and under threat in Muslim-majority countries.
