22 July 2010
Throughout scripture we see the impact that prayer has in the lives of believers, and we know that the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective (James 5:16b). So, this week, let’s stand together in prayer for victims of violence in Nigeria and Pakistan and praise God for the release of Eritrean refugees detained in Libya.

NigeriaNIGERIA: “We need your help.  Whatever you can do will be appreciated...
With these words, an elder of Mazah village appealed for help after his village was attacked by Fulani Muslims on 16 July.
Speaking to a CSW contact about the attacks, which left at least eight people dead and several  homes burned to the ground, he said, “We are still shocked from the whole event and are frustrated that we are powerless to these attacks…What can we do but depend on God? We need your help. Whatever you can do will be appreciated.”
The attacks targeted key members of the community including a church leader.  Reverend Nuhu Dawata escaped with one of his children, but sadly his wife and two other children were killed. His grandson was shot in the foot, thrown in a bathroom and left to die.  Praise God that he was found by the police and taken to hospital, where he is recovering well.
Together we can respond to the village elder’s plea for help by standing in prayer with the people of  Mazah.

Pakistan

PAKISTAN: Remembering victims of violence one year on
Last summer, over 100 houses were destroyed and eight people killed in Gojra, Pakistan, in extremist violence which was sparked by false accusations of blasphemy against Christians. Despite two official investigations, there has been no public statement of their findings and reconstruction of destroyed homes remains incomplete.

Eritrea

ERITREA: Praise God for the release of Eritrean refugees in Libya
Thanks so much to those of you who prayed and lobbied on behalf of 230 Eritrean refugees detained in Libya.  In an amazing answer to prayer, all 400 refugees held in various detention centres around the country have been released and given a three-month permit to stay in Libya. But, sadly, they were released with no assistance.  They have no food, money, shelter or medical treatment, and many are suffering the after effects of the torture, beatings and starvation they endured.  Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
By making a special gift to CSW you can support CSW’s Sub-Saharan Africa team, who lobbied  strongly  for international  intervention on behalf of these and other  Eritrean refugees in difficult  situations.
